GIANTS WIN 2ND STRAIGHT AT COORS, ROCKIES ARE REALLY BAD

5-8-24 RECAP: San Francisco Giants (16-21) vs Colorado Rockies (8-27)

After snapping a four game losing streak last night, the Giants took a small loss even before first pitch Wednesday night. Jorge Soler was placed on the 10 Day IL with a bum shoulder and the hot hitting Heliot Ramos was recalled from Sacramento. On the field it would be Jordan Hicks taking the ball and looking to stay hot for Bob Melvin’s team. Could the offense get him a lead to pitch with for a change tonight?

Rockies starter Peter Lambert must be mega ass because he let the Giants have a monster inning in the top of the 2nd. Michael Conforto got things going with a piss rocket solo shot into the right field seats to give the Giants a 1-0 lead. It was a tremendous blast. Very tremendous. Matt Chapman and Mike Yastrzemski would then smash back to back singles to the set table for the newly recalled Heliot Ramos. Ramos delivered with a single of his own to right field that scored Chapman to make it 2-0. Yastrzemski jetted to 3rd on the play and following a Blake Sabol strikeout, he’d score with on a safety squeeze from Nick Ahmed as Yaz barely beat the throw home to boost the lead to 3-0. It was then Jung Hoo Lee’s turn to get in on the action and he roped an RBI double to the right field wall and it was now 4-0. Thairo Estrada would then pop out to left field, but LaMonte Wade Jr. picked up the slack with a laser 2-run single up the middle to really open things up and crank the lead to 6-0. Like I said, tough scene for Peter Lambert. Hope his friends and family missed this one.

Jung Hoo Lee rips an RBI double in the top of the 2nd inning

In true Coors Field fashion, the Rockies answered back with a run of their own. Some two out thunder courtesy of Brenton Doyle as he launched a triple into the deepest part of the yard in centerfield. It didn’t take a hit to get him home as Blake Sabol whiffed on a Jordan Hicks fastball and Doyle scurried in to cut the lead to 6-1.

It got worse for Peter Lambert in the top of the 3rd. Yastrzemski smoked a leadoff triple into right field to set the Giants up yet again. Heliot Ramos would go down swinging for out number one, but Blake Sabol atoned for his pass ball with an RBI double into left center to give the Giants their six run lead back at 7-1.

Colorado tried to climb back into the game a bit in the bottom of the 5th. With one out, Jordan Beck lined a double into left center and was driven home on a Charlie Blackmon single to creep the Rockies closer at 7-2. I swear Blackmon has been in the bigs since I was in the 5th grade.

It didn’t get easier for Hicks as Ezequiel Tovar singled to right field and Ryan McMahon drew a walk to load the bases. That set the table for 2023 All Star Elias Diaz and he hit a swinging bunt about 20 feet for an RBI infield single to make things interesting again at 7-3. Hicks would rally and get Brendan Rodgers to roll into a 6-4-3 double play to end the Rox rally. Whew!

Hicks was pulled in the bottom of the 6th by Giants manager Bob Melvin. Sean Hjelle was tasked with holding the four run  lead. Oddly enough, Hjelle might’ve been the lone bright spot coming out of the disastrous Phillies series last weekend. He clearly didn’t impress Melvin that much though as he was pulled with two outs after giving up a pair of singles. With runners at 1st & 3rd, lefty Taylor Rogers was brought in to face fellow lefty Charlie Blackmon. It was another battle won by Blackmon as he lined a soft liner up the middle that Nick Ahmed couldn’t snag and it was now 7-4. Rogers limited the damage there as Tovar grounded out to 1st to end the inning.

With reliever Anthony Molina on the mound in the top of the 7th, Michael Conforto kept his strong night going by drawing a two out walk. That brought Matt Chapman to the dish and Molina promptly threw a wild pitch which sent Conforto to 2nd base. That proved to be a big play when Matt Chapman smacked one down the 3rd base line where Ryan McMahon made an outstanding diving stop. However, good fortune found the Giants as his throw went under 1st baseman Hunter Goodman’s glove. It would go down as an infield hit for Chapman and Conforto, who never stopped running, came into score to give the Giants a run back to make it 8-4.

The back end relievers came through for the Giants in the 7th and 8th innings once again. Ryan Walker and Tyler Walker chucked a pair of scoreless frames to keep the lead at 8-4. With the lead still at four runs heading to the 9th, it felt like it would be a Camilo Doval night.

Sure as shit, it would end up being Doval and like every Coors Field 9th inning, things got a little weird. Doval walked Blackmon and Tovar back to back to begin the inning, so that was neat. Fortunately, Doval made the big pitch against Ryan McMahon and induced a 3-6-1 double play to put a damper on the rally. It wasn’t over yet though as Elias Diaz stepped up and launched a 2-run dinger into the left field seats to cut the Giants lead in half at 8-6. Doval slammed the door after that as he got Brendan Rodgers to groundout to Nick Ahmed to finally give us our 8-6 Giants final. Two in a row! It’s a May miracle!

Hard to believe, but the Giants will look to bust out the brooms tomorrow against an actual Major League Baseball team. The Rockies technically are! It’ll be Keaton Winn (3-4, 4.41) looking to bounce back from a shit show outing in Philly and fellow righty, Cal Quantrill (1-3, 4.31), will look to be the stopper for the Rox. First pitch 12:10 PM PT. We’ll be drinking in celebration or misery once the workday is over tomorrow!
